John Chappell, originally from southern Virginia, is an emerging artist based in New York City and recent graduate of The Juilliard School, where he earned his BFA in Dance.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, performer, and creator who thrives in a diverse array of mediums, John aims to deeply connect through his passion and experience in dance, choreography, acting, singing, teaching, modeling, photography, performance art, and more.

  • John Chappell recently earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance from The Juilliard School, where he also advanced his training in voice and acting.

    During his time at school, John originated roles in new creations by choreographers such as Studio Wayne McGregor, Pam Tanowitz, Lea Ved, Ethan Colangelo, My’Kal Stromile, Hope Boykin, Chanel DaSilva, and more, as well as numerous student-choreographed works from various Juilliard performances between 2022 and 2026. He has performed repertory by William Forsythe, Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Shen Wei, and José Limón, among others. John has also attended various training programs, such as Ballet BC, American Ballet Theatre, and Nederlands Dans Theater, where he learned repertoire by Crystal Pite, Johan Inger, Medhi Walerski, Jiří Kylián, and more.

    Over the course of his time at The Juilliard School and during his pre-college training, John has studied a multitude of dance techniques, including but not limited to contemporary, classical ballet, pointe, jazz, theater, hip-hop, tap, acrobatics, modern techniques such as Graham, Limón, Horton, Cunningham, and more. John has experience and interest in both concert and commercial work. He also has a background in artistic gymnastics.

  • John’s choreographic voice explores a wide vocabulary, from classical ballet and pointe work to visceral abstraction and human nature. Whether telling a story or creating a visual landscape, John views creation as a layered journey for both the performer and viewer. John is heavily inspired by nature and all it offers, aiming to illuminate the vivid correlation between us and that which surrounds us. With an eye for beauty, sensuality, and simplicity, John finds elegance in the strange and unexpected.

    During his time at Juilliard, John created 10+ works for student choreography showcases, and has been recognized for his choreography in Juilliard’s Choreographic Honors. Most recently, he premiered his work, Primaveral, as one of six chosen choreographers for Juilliard’s Senior Production 2026.

    John is currently offering choreography in solo, duo, trio, and group work for student, collegiate, pre-professional, and professional dancers and companies.

  • John teaches a range of disciplines in dance and movement that includes, but is not limited to, classical ballet, pointe, contemporary, floor work, improvisation, modern, jazz, acrobatics/gymnastics, and composition. For dancers looking for personalized growth, he offers private lessons, as well as virtual sessions online via Zoom.

    John is a dedicated mentor to young dancers and those aspiring to train professionally. His teaching emphasizes the deep importance of dance as a true art form and a powerful means of self-expression. He holds a special devotion to the next generation of artists, intentionally shaping his guidance to cultivate not only their technique, but also their determination, grace, character, and relationship with dance.

    Alongside the many opportunities John has had to teach and assist both during and prior to school, he has trained in pedagogy at Juilliard under the mentorship of Hilary Easton.
